Baumholder

Baumholder is part of U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz.

The housing allowance is OHA for Baumholder, including Boerfink. The lookup line reads BAUMHOLDER (INCL BOERFINK) (RP). Ramstein is a different locality in the same state.

Housing allowance

• OHA pays rent up to the lease or the ceiling, whichever is less.
• See the rates table for your pay grade.

The Military OneSource housing page covers who may live off post.

• Service members need a certificate of non-availability, or an exception, before economy housing.
• The housing office helps with that search.
• Department of War civilians are not authorized government-controlled quarters.
• Those civilians must use the housing office before they sign.
• Contractors use their company.

Off-post housing is in 100 towns and villages within a 30-mile radius.

• The wait to find a unit is about 10 to 30 days.
• Rents average 800 euros for a one-bedroom apartment.
• Rents average 2,000 euros for a four-bedroom house.
• Most landlords want a deposit of one to three months of rent.
• Those are page averages, not an OHA ceiling.

On-base housing

On-post family housing is for soldiers from private through staff sergeant.

• They need command-sponsored dependents on an accompanied 36-month tour.
• Soldiers in the military couples program also qualify.
• Soldiers who are not command sponsored cannot sign up for family housing.
• All soldiers must live on base while quarters are full.
• Exceptions are reviewed case by case.

Unaccompanied housing depends on rank.

• Single soldiers and geographical bachelors, private through staff sergeant, live in the barracks.
• They may have roommates.
• A bona fide bachelor E-6 may ask to live off post.
• That request must be approved before arrival in Germany.
• If it is not, the soldier gets no temporary lodging allowance and stays in the barracks.
• Officers and E-7 to E-9 use senior or officer quarters when those quarters are open.

The same page gives two wait times. Ask which one is current.

• One paragraph says one to six weeks, depending on bedrooms.
• A later paragraph says one to eight weeks, and that it can take longer.
• The office is in the hospital complex, building 8746, Baumholder.

Power and pets, from that page:

• German power is 220 volts at 50 hertz.
• U.S. power is 110 volts at 60 hertz.
• Many quarters have both 110-volt and 220-volt outlets.
• The frequency is still 50 hertz.
• On-post housing has no air conditioning.
• Pets are not allowed in barracks.
• Pets are not allowed in senior enlisted or officer unaccompanied quarters.

Before you sign

• Go to the housing office before you sign.
• Economy housing needs a certificate of non-availability or an approved exception.
• Ask which government-housing wait is current.
• An unaccompanied E-6 may want to live off post. Ask if that exception must be approved before arrival.
