Housing allowance

• OHA pays rent up to the lease or the ceiling, whichever is less.

The NSA Souda Bay housing page sets the rules.

• Check in at the housing service center on arrival.
• Unaccompanied E-1 through E-4 live in barracks.
• Unaccompanied members and geographical bachelors at E-5 and above live in the community.
• E-4 and below are not authorized temporary lodging allowance when a barracks room is available.
• Rents range from 500 to 1,500 euro a month. That range is not a ceiling.
• At signing, bring two months' rent in euro: the deposit and the first month.
• A utility deposit can be up to 130 euro.
• E-5 and above should have around $2,500 on hand, depending on pay grade and rent.
• Advance OHA can be requested at least three days before signing if that cash is not available.
• Do not agree a rent before the housing office negotiates it.
• Homes you find still need a housing inspection.
• You should generally have a lease and a move-in appointment within 30 days.
• Then move within 3 to 5 days of signing.
• Do not ship U.S. stoves, dishwashers, refrigerators, washers, or dryers.
• The office issues those for the tour when the property does not include them.
• Greek homes are smaller than U.S. homes.

Temporary lodging allowance is paid in 10-day increments. The maximum is 60 days.

• It starts the day the sponsor reports.
• Or it starts the day the first family member arrives, if that travel was approved.
• It can end if adequate permanent housing is declined.

Schools

The housing page says not every nearby school teaches in English.

Before you sign

• Check in at housing before you agree a rent or sign a lease.
• Unaccompanied E-4 and below: ask whether a barracks room is open.
• Budget two months of rent in euro at signing.
• Ask about advance OHA at least three days before that appointment if you need it.
