Leave is time away from duty that your service charges against a balance. How you ask for it is a unit process. This page does not describe a local form or a duty roster.

What DFAS prints

The DFAS page on special leave accrual says a member normally may not carry forward a leave balance of more than 60 days into a new fiscal year. Special leave accrual is an exception that can allow more than 60 days in the circumstances that page describes. The same page says that, effective 1 January 2023, the special leave accrual maximum was reduced from 120 days to 90 days, and that members have two fiscal years to use the excess above 60 days. Read that page for the categories. Do not plan on a balance from a summary.

This guide does not print how many days you earn in a month. DFAS did not state an accrual rate on the page above. Use the DFAS leave pages, including About Leave, and your servicing personnel office.

Your Leave and Earnings Statement is where DFAS says a protected special leave accrual balance is remarked, when you have one. The remark includes an expiration date. Your use-or-lose balance on that statement is the normal leave set to expire by 30 September of the current year, in the words of that page.
